Complimentary commemorative collection of 4 "gold-etch" prints by the famous actor produced shortly after his death. Each foil print display is mounted on a 10.5"x8" pressed cardboard mat. Each is facsimile autographed at the bottom. Attractive folder presentation. Condition is considered GOOD to FAIR with moderate surface/edge wear. There are several vertical creases in gold foil on each print (appears to be as made). No tears or missing pieces apparent. We feel this collection is in very displayable condition by most standards.

Lionel Herbert Blythe was born in Philadelphia, Pa., on April 28, 1878. As a young man, Lionel Barrymore studied art in Paris, but this came to an end in 1905 when he returned to the United States to "go into the family business" of acting. It is said that Lionel Barrymore acted for the money and was not really happy in this profession. On many occasions, he could be found drawing and doing etchings between scenes on movie sets, and in 1935 the Society of American Sketchers named one of his pieces one of the best prints of that year. 

The best that I can figure out is that the gold-colored foil prints were issued in a set in the early to mid-1970s and were also available in silver-colored foil examples during the same time period. It appears that the gold foil pieces came in a portfolio (not same for silver prints), with a cover adorned with sailing ships and seabirds that was titled "Collector's Portfolio of Gold-Etch Prints by Lionel Barrymore".
