Ketak Grass Basket With Mahogany Insert, Bird carvings Motif as ornament. Small Ketak Basket with lid, it combines two traditional sex specific crafts, basketry - female and wood carving - male. During the rainy season the people farm. Rice is the traditional staple crop and the structure of the Sasak village revolves around it's production. That "adat" responsibility takes precedence over basket weaving which is vigorously practiced in the dry season. "Ketak" is the name of the type of grass used for these baskets. I have ketak baskets in the office that are over 100 years old - this is a very durable material. The grass grows wild in the transitional zone between "sawah" rice fields and forest. The bundles are sorted by diameter and size, soaked, split and dried. One of the factors that determine the quality of a basket is the number of "splits" the grass was divided into. This is a 3 split basket.
